Regarding the Current State of Church Marketing

I was in Nashville two weeks ago for the Youth Specialties convention and was handed a small card in the convention center that looked something like this:

It had a web site written on it along with a few sentences on what their purpose is. (I thought the name was pretty self-explanatory, but whatever.) It’s an incredible site, and these guys have a lot of good things to say.

If you’re too lazy to click on the picture itself to go to the web site, here’s a text link:

That was quite a let-down. I was looking forward to finding a good site about how churches should not use the same marketing techniques as the world, or how they should not use marketing techniques at all. They were trying to be “real” with me. But it felt fake. A real church doesn’t need any marketing except prayer, evangelism, and word-of-mouth.

Well.. it’s more like, most churches try really hard, but they have no idea what they are doing and they end up failing miserably and looking lame… so this site is encouraging them to get with the times and to do it right.

For the record, I agree with you, and I’ll probably post something regarding it in the next month or two that’s almost as long as the postmodernism one…
